John is pursuing his PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He recently received an NSF GK12 fellowship through the 3Helix program as a result of his effective STEM programming for a K12 audience. His research at RPI involves measuring the loads in the lumbar spine using passive wireless sensors with the goal of identifying the biomechanical and muscular causes of degenerative disc disease. Before he started at RPI John received a bachelors degree in Physics at SUNY Geneseo where he was a 4 year varsity basketball player. John has been the STEM director at 4th Family since Fall 2012. John combines his knowledge and love for sports and science to develop programs where students can discover the application of scientific concepts in real life by exploring how the human body performs in athletics.
